USGS station 08074000, Buffalo Bayou at Houston, 27 October 2008. The baseline fell from 3.96 ft to 1.46 ft in a day and stayed there. That looks exactly like an instrument falling over.
It was not. The rating curve fitted before that date still predicts the flow afterwards to within 3%, so the datum was re-referenced deliberately and the discharge record is continuous across the break. One number could not have told you that. Two could.
Then an outside reviewer read it and said: you mixed two rulers. Our window started in 1990 and ran across the 2008 step, so the curve was fitted to two regimes at once. He was right. The correction cut our own headline figure from ×1.47 to ×1.26, and it cost us nineteen of twenty-seven data points.
That correction is on the page. So is the one before it, where a solver of ours diverged in exactly the regime the page names. Both are still there because a tool that has never been wrong in public has never been checked in public.

Zero measurements of our own, and that is the point. Every figure comes from USGS, NOAA, NASA, CODATA, or a published paper, and every one is cited on the page it appears on. Nothing here has been run against a board, an antenna or an instrument by us.
Every tool states its own maturity — validated, beta, filter or held — and what it has not been checked against. Some of them say they are not ready, in their own words, on their own pages. That is the part worth reading.
Nothing here is a forecast. Not the gauge, not the waves, not the distance. A flow figure beside a flood mark reads as a warning and is not one, and the pages say so before they say anything else.
